DS Smith is looking for an experienced Health & Safety Manager to provide strong and effective leadership & management of Health, Safety & Environmental (HS&E) for DS Smith Logistics within Kemsley Paper Mill. 

Reporting in to the UK Logistics Manager, This role will primarily be based at Kemsley, however there will be a requirement to travel to other UK Logistics sites where necessary. The successful candidate will work with the UK Logistics Manager to ensure that the HS&E is fully integrated into all business processes and further develop the existing positive H&S culture centrally, and also at site. This includes the need to ensure H&S compliance with the law and relevant regulations. 

This position offers an opportunity to manage Logistics HS&E department, as well as working within the Safety team in the Paper Mill, developing and supporting legal compliance of the due diligence of the manufacturing and logistics organisation.
This role also provides an opportunity to a forward thinking individual who possess drive and initiative within a challenging and dynamic environment.

Being a Health and Safety & Environmental (HS&E) Manager at DS Smith will involve…

•    Responsibility for the preparation, execution and continuous improvement of the Company Safety and Environmental Safety Management Systems.
•    Responsibility for developing and maintaining contacts with relevant H&S regulatory and industry organisations and actively participate in meetings and initiatives with them.
•    Management of HS&E across all site functions such that working practices are both safe and to relevant HS&E standards
•    Review, develop & implement effective H&S Policies, Procedures & Standards such that they are legally compliant & meet Group standards & Policies
•    Ensuring HS&E performance is effectively controlled, monitored, analysed and audited and feedback to relevant Mill & Group personnel and assist in the development and implementation of appropriate corrective actions
•    Development of HS&E management documentation & information for both Mill and Contracting Company personnel
•    Actively participate in Divisional H&S network (regular meetings, audits and expert teams)
•    Lead with HS&E matters, developments, investigations and initiatives as and when required, immediately reporting dangerous occurrences.
•    Participate as required in any future strategic development projects/opportunities.
•    Develop and implement effective H&S training needs analysis and programmes
•    Ensure management controls are in place for incidents relating to oil and fuel spillages, being aware of any issues relating to diesel & waste.
•    Ensure management controls are in place to maintain a clean and risk free working environment at all levels.
•    Seek to minimise unnecessary vehicle related pollution by restricting fuel consumption.
•    Lead by example, setting the standard of conduct required for excellent H&S leadership, communicating effectively with leaders and employees alike.
•    Participate as required in any future strategic development projects/opportunities.
•    As a member of The Logistics Senior Management Team (SMT), act as the prime mover for all safety related issues

What our ideal candidate will have:
•    Relevant H&S Qualification - Chartered member of IOSH, NEBOSH or equivalent experience
•    Experienced and robust H&S professional with strong leadership skills able to make a positive impact within a challenging & dynamic working environment
•    Experience of maintaining, developing and implementing HS&E Policies, Procedures and Standards, in a dynamic environment, to ensure compliance with the law and relevant regulations
•    Effective relationship building, planning & organisational skills
•    Fully IT literate
•    Extensive experience in HS&E management role within logistics and manufacturing environment
